We are excited to partner with KOMU 8 every Sunday at 10 AM in January to bring professional dance into your living room. The program provides exerts from four of our repertoire pieces as well as the Mareck Center for Dance short film, Naissance which premiered online only in October. Here you can access the full video of each work that was featured for the KOMU special. Please visit our Donate Now page if you would like to make a contribution to our organization. It is our wonderful community that has helped us make it through the last year and we are forever greatful for your support.

Naissance (2020)

Naissance is the French word for “dawning” which is exactly what this project has been for Mareck Center for Dance. Mareck Center for Dance dancers have been filmed at iconic locations throughout Columbia, Missouri while dancing to music by local artist, Molly Healey. All the videos have been combined to create this unique masterpiece that is unlike anything done before by the company.

The Waiting Room (2014)

The Waiting Room was choreographed by Karen Mareck Grundy in 2014, in collaboration with Odyssey Chamber Music Series. The composer of the music for this piece is Igor Stravinsky. The dancers featured in this piece are Emily Baker, Caroline Millikin Euker, Alex J. Gordon, Joshua Hasam, Joel Hathaway, Jordan Mazur, Keely Misenhimer, Elise Mosbacher, Fernando Rodriguez and Caitlin Sloan. In an interview with the Columbia Daily Tribune, Karen Mareck Grundy revealed that “for each of the nine movements, she imagined the drama of different kinds of waiting rooms — everything from the “shared misery of the DMV” to a headmaster’s office and a train station. It’s easy to envision the big life dramas that occur in these spaces — from the frustration of dealing with bureaucrats to the sadness of parting with a loved one embarking on a trip.”

Embrace (2016)

Embrace was choreographed by Karen Mareck Grundy in 2016. The music for this piece was composed by Tom Andes, with piano also by Tom Andes, saxophone by Micheal Neu, bass by Kevin Hennessy, and drums by Troy Hall. Costumes for this piece were designed by Barbara A. Smith. The dancers featured in this piece are Joel Hathaway and Kay Whtiney. Embrace is about a tumultuous relationship with a controlling partner. We witness the ups and downs of emotion throughout the piece just as we’ve all experienced in real life.

People, Places, Things (2016)

People, Places, Things was choreographed by Autumn Eckman in 2016. The music for the piece was composed by Travis McFarlane. The dancers featured in this piece are Joel Hathaway, Elise Mosbacher, Anthony Sigler, Caitlin Slon, Meredith Green Soares, and Kay Whitney. People, Places, Things first premiered at Jesse Auditorium in our “Live: Returns” performance. It was composed specifically on piano for that show and it was so well received that we brought it to Newport, Rhode Island for the Great Friends Dance Festival in 2017.

Happenstance (2017)

Happenstance was choreographed by Christian Denice in 2017. The music for the piece was composed by Dennis DeSantis and Nathan Daughtrey, with percussion by Megan Arnes and saxophone by Leo Saguiguit. The costumes for this piece were designed by Barbara A. Smith. The dancers featured in this piece are Elise Mosbacher, Minh-Tuan Nguyen, Fernando Rodriguez, Anthony Sigler, Caitlin Sloan, José Soares, Meredith Green Soares, and Kay Whitney. Happenstance first premiered at the Missouri Theatre during the 2017 “LIVE!” performance.  This piece reflects on the impact of chance-meetings with strangers in a hectic world. Small intimate moments are surrounded by chaos as the dancers explore missed connections.
