Ron Fisher
I’m a local farm-raised boy and then later a City-raised Man from our beautiful City here in Columbia Mo. I decided one day, my calling was to be a Paramedic and a Firefighter at the same time and to help people. 30 years of 911 calls have left me proud, yet injured. Dance has become a vital part of my healing journey, especially after losing five fellow first responders during my time in service.
My own service came to an abrupt end after a serious accident involving a vertical impact with concrete, resulting in cracked knees, elbows, and wrists. I don’t recommend that! After three years of rebuilding my strength and fitness, I can confidently say I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. I’ve learned to walk again, and now it’s time for me to dance!
While caring for my Mom (my last patient), we both talked about the importance of doing something that can express how we feel. We talked about my Moms love of dance and her regret at not dragging my Dad on the dance floor. During one of those “talks” that Moms have with their Sons,,,,, My Mom asked me to please do something for myself for a change. She said I’ve served others, and now it’s time to dance and celebrate life in all its pain, joy and most importantly, love.
When the dark fog of losing both my parents finally lifted, I knew what I needed to do. I turned to my Mareck Dance family and shared my story, filled with pain but also with love and joy from the laughter of good days. My Mareck Dance family welcomed me with open arms, showing me how dance can heal.
Many first responders carry a heavy weight on their hearts. Dance and song can heal our pain and articulate our struggles. Most importantly, they can spread joy and love in all its forms. Dancing to beautiful music transcends cultures and languages, helping us celebrate life and heal our wounds. Dance allows me to release my pain and stress, and it has become the most beautiful, healing, and joyful way to express that we are alive and it’s time to celebrate.
It’s time to Dance and celebrate life!!
From my survivor heart,
